ABD Başkanı Donald Trump’ın bu yıl ‘Birliğin Durumu’ konuşmasına özel olarak davet ettiği 15 konuk arasında 1969 yılında Ay’a Amerikan bayrağını diken Apollo 11 misyonunda görev yapan astronotlardan Buzz Aldrin ile geçen Ekim ayında Pittsburgh’daki ‘Hayat Ağacı’ sinagogunu hedef alan silahlı saldırıdan kurtulan Judah Samet vardı. Trump’ın konukları dışında, salonda bir de Kongre üyelerinin davetlileri yer aldı.

Geçen haftadan beri Washington’da temaslarda bulunan Suriye Demokratik Güçleri’nin (SDG) siyasi kanadı Suriye Demokratik Kongresi’nin (SDK) yöneticisi İlham Ahmed’de salonda Trump’ı dinleyenler arasındaydı. Demokrat Parti’nin tartışmalı isimlerinden Hawaii Temsilciler Meclisi üyesi Tulsi Gabbard, konuşmaya birkaç saat kala sosyal medya hesabından İlham Ahmed’in kendisinin davetlisi olarak SOTU’da hazır bulunacağını duyurdu. 2020’de başkanlık yarışına katılacağını açıklayan isimler arasında yer alan Gabbard, 2017’de Suriye’de Beşar Esad ile yaptığı görüşme nedeniyle eleştirilmişti.
